Malt Liquor Madness: Colt45 vs. St. Ides

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Winner: Colt45

Score:

Colt45: 5

St. Ides Original: 0

This was not a fair fight. Colt 45 crushed St. Ides. If we were ranking these on krunk power, then St. Ides would win hands down. But the fact is it tastes like filthy swamp water syrup, at least after tasting other, less intense malt liquors. When you’ve only got $2 and change, it’s fine, but St. Ides had nothing on the Colt. The judges unanimously picked the Colt 45 as the winner.

Malt Liquor Madness Round 1: Mickeys vs. Country Club

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Winner: Mickeys

Score:

Mickeys: 3

Country Club: 2

Details: This match was very close, it was a dead heat. Mickey’s barely pulled ahead at the end. We equated this to a game between #8 and #9 ranked teams, two teams closely paired and ready to battle. Mickey’s reigns supreme.

Malt Liquor Madness 2009 bracketology released

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

The brackets for 40cozy’s first annual Malt Liquor Madness have been drawn, and you can view them below or download the pdf if any of you at home would like to participate. In the coming weeks, there will only remain one dominant malt liquor champion from these sweet 16 competitors. The competition involves a blind tasting of two malt liquors and then a collective voting on which is superior and gets to move on to the next round. Here are the face offs in the first round, which will be held later this week (Thursdayish):

malt liquor march madness bracket

(Download the official bracket pdf: 40cozybracket2009.pdf) Below are the Sweet 16 contestants:

Mickey’s vs. Country Club

Colt 45 vs. St. Ides Original

Hurricane High Gravity vs. Steel Reserve

King Cobra vs. Samichlaus

Olde English vs. Tilt (Green)

Shlitz O.M.L. vs. Sparks (Black)

St. Ides Berry Special Brew vs. Schlits V.S.L.

Four vs. Magnum

…Here’s an image of the physical bracket we built:

img_1755

Now some of you are going to say, “Why would you add those fruity tasting drinks like Sparks?” A few reasons. First, they technically are ‘malt liquors’ and as such we can’t discriminate. They let schools like Morehead State and East Tennessee State in the tourney, so who are we to get picky? There are many other great malt liquors out there, but after weeks of scouring the liquor stores of Southern California, these are the finest (and only) high gravity beverages around.

We’ll be posting soon after the first round, check back in to see which brew makes it to the Elite 8. If you feel your favorite malt liquor isn’t being represented, leave a comment and we’ll work them into next years contestants.

40cozy on the 91X Morning Show today

Friday, March 13th, 2009

91xlogogifLos Nasty and B Rizzle made an appearance in the 91X studios early this morning. You can listen to it here – it’s about 3/4 of the way through when the boys put their 40’s down and start speakin the Word of the Cozy. Matt Diablo and Carlos of 91x’s morning show are always good to us. One of them even called us the “Bill Gates’ of malt liquor,” which is a very flattering (and ridiculous) statement.

Over some 40oz beverages, the guys discussed our iphone apps, our upcoming event Malt Liquor Madness, and the best liquor stores in San Diego to find 40 ouncers. Great time, big fan of those guys, I think we’re going back on the show in a couple weeks for some more drinking.

Notsoberfest 2008: Burning bridges, dousing that fire with malt liquor

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Last weekend we celebrated P.J.’s 24th by renting out a warehouse and going apeshit. Our marketing guy and resident drunk, this party needed to represent every part of his ridiculous existence. Around 100 rowdy hooligans showed up to rage, paint, crush, drink, dance, bang and fight into the early morning. Supplies required for such an event:

  • 100 year old lumber mill, rooftop bbq, graffiti room,
  • Two kegs, 12 handles, thirty-six 40oz’s of malt liquor, 50 bottles of homebrew
  • One 6 ft tall pinata
  • DJ spinning nasty baby-making House
  • 5 beer pong tables, 30 person flip cup game, beer bong
  • Paint, spraypaint, paint pens, pig’s blood

The original plan was for all the drunk asses to crash in the warehouse, so we could all get crazy without getting behind the wheel. Destruction ensued: the walls, livers, dance floor, massive pinata, furniture, nothing was safe. And leave it to P.J. to be the only person we know to get kicked out of his own birthday party.

All in all, the first inaugural Notsoberfest was a hit and next year’s should be even wilder. Check out the photo gallery and see it for yourself.

Bryan drinks!

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to introduce to you the “Mug Shot Drinking Game.”  This makes for a great party game and always ends in a few hurt feelings, but then thats the point of a party drinking game right?

Bryan Drinks!

How it works:

1. Get 4-7 people gathered around a computer so everyone can see the screen.

2. Make sure everyone has their favorite drink in their hands, preferably 40’s with cozies.

3. Load up this slideshow of 250 awesome mugshots.

4. Go through the list and for each image decide who in the group the character in the mugshot looks most like.  You can vote, shout out names, point… whatever works for your group.

5. Person most like mugshot has to drink.

6. The game ends when somebody starts crying.

Enjoy.

12 Beers You Should Only Drink In College

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

PBR!!

Campussqueeze.com has a great post about 12 Beers You Should Only Drink In College.  They cover some of the greats such as Natural Ice, Schmidts, and, one of our favorites, the blue-ribbon-awarded Pabst.  We’re a little sorry they didn’t include any of our favorite malt-liquors.  Of course you should be drinking malt liquor well after/before college so Olde English doesn’t really belong on this list.

Brass Monkey – Live it, Love it, Drink it

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Now, I’m hoping if you are at this site you’re quite familiar with the wonderful intricacies of the Brass Monkey. If not then don’t fret, because you’ll soon be enjoying these next Sunday brunch with your yacht club chums.

According to Wikipedia, “brass monkey” refers to an English folk band, comic book villain, a 1948 film, and is a colloquial term meaning something solid and inert that can only be affected by extremes, or meaning an extreme of cold. However, malt liquor enthusiasts and the Beastie Boys will all agree that the brass monkey is a magnificent street cocktail, principal ingredient: forty water. Other lesser known nicknames are beermosa and fotemosa.

40oz for brass monkey

How to Make a Brass Monkey

Necessary ingredients: 40 ounce bottle of malt liquor, orange juice (or orange-like drink, i.e. Tampico)

The next steps get a little complicated, so bear with me. First, drink the 40oz beverage down to the top of the label. Next, take orange juice and pour into the top of the malt liquor bottle until filled to the brim. Final step: drink.

Enjoy this fine creation on the Lord’s day, for that is when such dandy concoctions were meant to be consumed to glorify the Creator of malt liquor and that orange-colored sugar water, Tampico.
